9. COLLABORATION

Collaboration during any class makes a huge difference in your learning experience. It is especially important for online learning.

Collaboration is a must!

Online and distant learning doesn’t have to have any disadvantages compared to in-class courses. You never have to feel like the lone stranger. You can talk to your teacher or classmates through many available media.

Use these or any other of your favorites:

  • Skype
  • Mavmail
  • Personal email
  • ooVoo
  • Phone calls
  • Texting

NOTE: You’ll want to stay aware of different time zones and coordinate your schedule with others.

Teams and Pairs

Your teacher may pair you up with other students or create teams for particular assignments. You must make the effort to communicate with everyone on your team. Sometimes this takes patience with others who may not have technological skills that match yours. Or you yourself may have that uncomfortable learning curve to catch up, so you can communicate with others.

Tips for easing the long-distant collaboration challenge:

  • Make contact as soon as groups are formed.
  • Decide as a group which medium the group will use for communication.
  • Use it often!
  • Take responsibility to hold up your end of the bargain–show up on time and do the work you’ve agreed to do!
  • If necessary, learn whatever you must in order to participate as a valuable team member.
